Here are some essential steps to take in order to become an A&E Nurse in Ireland.
Firstly, candidates should achieve a nursing qualification via a programme that is recognised by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (e.g Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
Once fully qualified as a nurse, the candidate must register with the NMBI - the regulatory board for nurses and midwives in Ireland. This board exists to make sure that all nurses working in Ireland are fully qualified and safe to care for members of the public.
Having successfully graduated from a nursing programme and registered with the NMBI, the candidate can go on to achieve a further certificate in A&E nursing. This will mean additional specialist training.
If English isn’t your first language, you may need to pass an English language proficiency test that demonstrates your ability to communicate in English.
If applicable, you may need to obtain the necessary work permits to work in Irish healthcare. These will depend on your nationality and immigration status.
A&E Nurses should have a broad range of skills. They work with a wide variety of patients across all ages and backgrounds, so outstanding communication is absolutely essential for this role. They also need high levels of emotional resilience, especially when providing trauma care, along with the ability to effectively triage patients, prioritising those with immediate care needs. A&E Nurses need strong critical thinking for making informed decisions under pressure, as well as the technical skills to operate any equipment in the department and administer medications.
No day in the A&E department is the same, so adaptability skills and the ability to multi-task will go a long way in helping them to manage unpredictable or hectic situations.
Recently graduated A&E Nurses in Ireland might expect an annual salary of around €38,678. However, healthcare salaries within the Irish public sector (Health Service Executive - or HSE) are based on a ‘points’ system, which determines annual salaries based on experience and skillset.
