The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has recently changed the requirements for overseas Nurses and Midwives sitting the International English Language Test System (IELTS).
Following proposals to lower the required pass rate for the IELTS, the NMC has confirmed that Nurses and Midwives from overseas now need a level 6.5 in the writing portion of the tests. A level 7 is still required for reading, listening and speaking.
The decision was made following concerns from key stakeholders, who explained to the NMC that although candidates were able to communicate to a high standard of English, many Nurses and Midwives were only just missing out on the required IELTS level 7.
IELTS results that meet the requirements and are under two years old will be considered by the NMC for registration.
The changes to the IELTS requirements will take effect from 5th December 2018.
