Honouring Black History Month Together

October marked the annual celebration of Black History Month. A time to honour the great contributions of Black individuals in all fields, including healthcare, exists. At Your World, we view this as a chance to celebrate and learn. We want to connect with the cultural and historical contributions that shape our society by reclaiming narratives.

At Your World, we promote awareness and inclusivity in our team and the healthcare community. This helps create a workplace that values all backgrounds and empowers every voice.

Embracing Cultural Awareness Through Events: British Black History Month

A key part of this celebration is taking part in cultural events celebrating Black History Month in the UK. These events offer a great chance for learning and awareness. Zenna Hoyte, our Operating Theatres Business Manager, has curated a list of must-see events:

  • Zanele Muholi Exhibit at the Tate: This Tate exhibit offers a powerful visual exploration of African identity and resilience.
  • Black Brighton Market: This market celebrates Black-owned businesses. It supports local artisans and entrepreneurs. You can learn more about the market and its impact here.
  • Black Men on the Couch, Coventry: This special event highlights mental health in the Black community. You can learn more about this important discussion at Belgrade Theatre.
  • African Night Fever at Brighton Dome: Enjoy African music, dance, and togetherness. Learn more information about the event at the Brighton Dome.

We encourage our staff and network to attend these events. This helps them celebrate and learn about the diverse backgrounds that enrich our communities.

Supporting Black-Led Charities: Spotlight on the Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust

Another key aspect of this month is supporting Black-led charities that drive impactful change. Oscar Peter Gicheru, our Commercial Bid Writer, shared the inspiring work of the Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust. You can learn more about Oscar's work with the Trust here.

This charity is important in healthcare. It focuses on getting more diverse donors, especially from the Black community. This helps support patients who need life-saving treatments.

Supporting charities like this aligns with our commitment to building a more inclusive healthcare landscape. By increasing representation in healthcare support services, organisations like the Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust provide essential resources and advocacy that benefit the whole community.

We wanted to connect more with this important charity. This month, we were happy to welcome two representatives from the Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust to our office. They further explained their work and mission as well as showing us how more diverse donors help patients in need.

This visit gave Your World employees a chance to sign up as potential donors. As a result, 22 of our employees signed up to be stem cell donors.

This exceeded our expectations, and we ran out of registration packs, with more finding out more information to sign up at a later date!

This is supporting our goal of creating a more inclusive healthcare system. Together, we can make a real difference through lifesaving donations.

The Role of Cultural Competency in Enhancing Patient Care

Research from the Research in Practice guide shows that culturally competent healthcare can improve patient satisfaction, enhance trust, and even lead to better health outcomes. In the United Kingdom, healthcare providers serve many different people. Adjusting care to meet their cultural and language needs is important.

Studies show that tailored care helps improve health outcomes. It makes patients feel more valued and understood. When caregivers adjust care to meet individual needs, patients are more likely to follow their treatment plans. This leads to better results and greater satisfaction.

Overall, personalised care is important for effective healthcare as it creates an inclusive health environment. This improves patient experiences and reduces health disparities.

At Your World, we know that having healthcare professionals who represent the UK's cultural and language diversity is important. This diversity helps provide better care for everyone.

We value the different backgrounds and languages of our healthcare workers. We connect healthcare facilities with staff from different backgrounds. This helps ensure that care focuses on patients and respects their unique needs.

Building an Inclusive Approach at Your World

Our commitment to diversity extends to our core mission: creating an inclusive recruitment strategy that ensures equal opportunities. Your World is proud to build partnerships and programs that help underrepresented healthcare professionals. We promote diversity in hiring and celebrate the cultural contributions of all communities.

This commitment goes beyond our Black History Month celebration. A continuous part of how we work and grow together exists.

Moving Forward with Purpose

Black History Month in England and the UK reminds us of the progress and challenges in healthcare and society. Your World is committed to supporting diversity, equality, and inclusion every day. We invite our current and future employees to celebrate, learn, and support a more inclusive future in healthcare.
