Key details about the role:

As an ITU Nurse or ICU Nurse, you’ll care for patients within the Intensive Therapy or Intensive Care Units! Your patients may include those with acute injuries, a life-threatening illness that requires specialist care or machinery, or a postoperative status. Therefore, these patients will require a higher level of care than those in general wards.

If you take on the role of an ITU/ICU Nurse, your daily tasks will likely include assessing and monitoring critically ill patients, charting their vital signs, planning their care, providing treatment, and evaluating a patient’s condition. You’ll also be responsible for ensuring any medical equipment is functioning correctly. 

As with most nursing jobs, critical care nurses should be compassionate, empathetic, patient, and kind and have top communication skills, especially with worried or stressed family members. However, the ITU/ICU is a high-pressure setting, so the ability to stay calm in intense situations, strong organisation, and a keen eye for detail when checking documents are also essential occupational skills.

What do ITU and ICU Nurses earn? 

Nurses working in the NHS are paid via the Agenda for Change (AfC) banding scale. These bands start at Band 5 for newly qualified nurses and increase to Band 8 with further experience and skill development.
